Arthritis Awareness Month

September is a significant month for many Canadians, as it marks Arthritis Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding and support for those affected by this often debilitating condition. With over 6 million Canadians living with arthritis, it's a condition that touches many lives, directly and indirectly.

Arthritis is a term used to describe a group of over 100 diseases characterized by inflammation in the joints or other areas of the body. Inflammation when in the joints can also cause considerable stiffness. Left unchecked, inflammation can lead to significant and often irreparable damage to the affected areas, resulting in loss of function and disability.

Unfortunately arthritis is a chronic condition.

Arthritis Awareness Month is an opportunity for us at Advanced Physiotherapy to highlight the importance of physiotherapy in managing arthritis. Fortunately, physical therapy can play a crucial role in improving quality of life for those with arthritis by helping to reduce pain, increasing joint mobility, and improving strength and coordination.

This September, let's shine a light on arthritis and spread the word about the vital role physiotherapy plays in the lives of those affected by this condition. Buildings and landmarks across Canada will be illuminated in blue to symbolize hope and support for the arthritis community. This visual representation of solidarity is a powerful reminder that no one is alone in their journey with arthritis.

At our clinic, we're committed to supporting our patients with personalized treatment plans that address the unique challenges of living with arthritis. We believe in a holistic approach that not only focuses on physical rehabilitation but also on educating patients about their condition and how to manage it effectively.

Our owner, physiotherapist Patrick Embley, is no stranger to Adult & Pediatric Rheumatology (Arthritis Conditions). Patrick worked for over 13+ years at the Mary Pack Arthritis Program - VGH. At the Mary Pack Arthritis Program Patrick was heavily involved in the clinical treatment of many of the different arthritis conditions deemed appropriate for physiotherapy interventions. He worked primarily with the adult population with arthritis conditions but also did some work at BC Children's Hospital for the pediatric rheumatology program. He was also involved in a few different studies with rheumatologists and pharmacists involving clients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Patrick continues to work with many of the rheumatologists and family physicians in the Lower Mainland in the care of their patients who have rheumatological conditions.

We encourage everyone to participate in Arthritis Awareness Month, whether it's by wearing blue, attending an event, or simply sharing information about arthritis and its impact. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of millions of Canadians living with arthritis.

Let's use this month to educate, support, and advocate for those living with arthritis and to recognize the healthcare professionals, including physiotherapists, who contribute to the management and care of this condition. Join us in spreading awareness and fostering a community of care and support.
